What is NELA Supportive Communities?
A sober living environment in Monroe, Louisiana, dedicated to supporting individuals recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction through the 12-Step Recovery Model.

What is your mission?
To empower individuals in recovery by providing a nurturing environment that promotes lasting sobriety and personal growth, emphasizing unity, accountability, and mutual respect.

How does NELA function?
We offer structured housing with both shared and private rooms, mandatory recovery meetings, community service opportunities, and support from our dedicated staff to guide your recovery journey.


Organizational Information

What is NELA Supportive Communities’ organizational status?
NELA Supportive Communities is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This status allows us to operate as a charitable entity dedicated to supporting individuals in their recovery journey.

How is NELA Supportive Communities structured?
Led by a Board of Directors, we have a Director of Operations and House Manager that oversee the day-to-day management of the residence. Our House Manger lives on-site to help with immediate needs. Our organization is supported by dedicated staff and volunteers who ensure the smooth operation of programs and facilities.

How can I get involved with NELA?

Donations and Support

How can I donate to NELA?
Donate through our website, via mail, or contact us directly for other options. Every contribution helps us maintain our facilities and support our members.

Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, all donations to NELA Supportive Communities are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

How are donations used?
Funds help to reduce membership dues, provide food and clothing when necessary, and support our housing operations as a whole, recovery programs, facility maintenance, and community outreach initiatives, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for our members. We ensure administrative costs are kept at a minimum, so donations can have the most impact.

Can I donate items instead of money?
Yes, you can donate items. Please visit our Donation Page to learn about needed items and donation procedures.


Fees and Payments

What are the membership dues?

  • Shared Room: $150/week
  • Private Room: $300/week
  • Transportation Fees: $25/week
    Fees include utilities; exclude food and personal items.

When are payments due?
Weekly payments are required upfront and are non-refundable.

What payment methods are accepted?
Cash, check, money order, credit/debit cards, Venmo, and Cashapp. Contact the House Manager for details.

Is a security deposit required?
No security deposit is required. However, all fees are collected upfront and members are responsible for any property damages.

Do you accept insurance or offer payment plans?
We do not accept insurance and do not offer payment plans. All payments must be made upfront.


Membership and Admissions

How do I apply for membership?
Review our Program Overview and Membership Handbook, then Apply Here. The process includes an interview and necessary paperwork.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • We currently only have a male-only residence
  • Commitment to sobriety and house rules
  • Willingness to participate in recovery programs and activities

Is there a probationary period?
Yes, a 14-day probation to integrate into the community with specific guidelines like accompanied outings and daily check-ins.

Do you accept individuals on medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
No controlled or potentially addictive medications are permitted within the sober house. MAT given at an off-site clinic are allowed with a prescription. All medications should be disclosed and approved during the application process.


House Policies and Rules

What is the curfew?

  • Curfew: 10:00 PM daily
  • Guests must leave by: 9:00 PM

Can I have visitors?
Yes, in common areas from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Visitors must be approved, clean, sober, and no overnight or minors allowed.

What is the substance use policy?
Zero-tolerance for alcohol and drugs. Violation results in immediate membership termination.

Are there mandatory meetings?
Yes:

  • One weekly housekeeping meeting
  • Three weekly recovery support meetings

Can I work while residing here?
Yes, employment is encouraged but must be approved. Jobs that jeopardize sobriety are prohibited. Non-working members must volunteer.

What items are prohibited?
Alcohol, drugs, controlled substances, weapons, drug paraphernalia, candles, personal appliances, pornography, and gambling items. Please see our Packing List for a comprehensive list of welcome and prohibited items.


Daily Life and Amenities

What should I bring?
Refer to our Packing List for essentials and prohibited items.

Do I have to share a room?
Options for shared or private rooms based on availability and fees. Changes require approval.

Are meals provided?
No, members are responsible for their own meals. Communal cooking is encouraged.

Is transportation provided?

  • Yes, house vehicles are provided for an additional $25/week fee.
  • A secure and covered bike rack is provided to lock personal bikes.
  • A bus stop is one block away at Harvey St. and Sherrouse St.

Are laundry facilities available?
Yes, on-site. Members must follow laundry schedules and keep the area clean.

What amenities are available?

  • Furnished bedrooms nad common areas
  • Kitchen and laundry facilities
  • Bedding and linens
  • Wi-Fi
  • All neccessary utilities
  • Designated smoking area

Can I use electronic devices?
Yes, without disturbing others. Inappropriate or illegal content is prohibited.


Recovery and Support

What recovery programs do you support?
AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery, and similar 12-Step programs. Active participation is required.

Do I need a sponsor?
Yes, obtain a sponsor within the first 7 days and maintain regular contact.

Is counseling provided?
We don’t offer clinical counseling but provide resources and referrals for professional support.

What support does the staff provide?
Guidance, rule enforcement, assistance with recovery plans, and addressing member concerns.

Are there community service opportunities?
Yes, participation in community service or outreach programs is encouraged.


Health and Safety

What health and safety measures are in place?
Regular maintenance, emergency procedures, first aid kits, and prompt issue resolution policies.

How are medical emergencies handled?
Contact the House Manager immediately and follow emergency protocols. Provide up-to-date emergency contacts upon admission.

What is the policy on infectious diseases?
Stay in your room, practice hygiene, and follow additional health guidelines provided by staff.


Conflict Resolution

How are conflicts handled?

  1. Discuss directly with the involved person
  2. Contact the House Manager if unresolved
  3. Escalate to the Director if needed
    -No retaliation policy for reporting concerns.

Can I be expelled?
Yes, for rule violations like substance use, violence, or illegal activities.


Departure and Aftercare

How to move out voluntarily?
Provide a 30-day notice, remove belongings by the move-out date, and return keys.

What if I leave abruptly?
Belongings left after 3 days will be donated or discarded. Arrange collection with the House Manager.

Is there post-departure support?
Yes, we offer referrals for housing, employment, and encourage alumni to stay connected.


Miscellaneous

Is there a dress code?
Appropriate attire is required in communal areas, meetings, and when visitors are present.

How are mail and packages handled?
Members collect their own mail. Notify the House Manager for large or valuable packages.

Do you have a non-discrimination policy?
Yes, we provide equal housing opportunities regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected class. To ensure the best chance for recovery success, our houses are single-gender, and we reserve the right to place or deny members from certain residences in a manner that minimizes the potential for romantic or sexual attraction between residents.

Can I suggest policy changes?
Yes, share your ideas during weekly meetings. Management considers member feedback essential for positive changes.
